OLD HENRY

Strength: Medium
Wrapper: Nicaragua
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Style: Robusto

A mans best friend, a companion, a member of the family. Just some of the things our dogs mean to us. Our dogs are very special in our life. So special that we may create a cigar in their remembrance. That’s the case with this cigar. It’s a very thoughtful, sweet and a great way to remember a special person .… or a dog. Tonight I say R.I.P. to a very special pooch and smoke a cigar in his behalf …. the Old Henry.

The first thing i noticed was the label. There’s a cute picture of an English Bulldog. The wrapper is a light brown Nicaraguan Corojo with a soft texture to it.

While smelling the wrapper I picked up some Caramel Cream. The foot was the same, but a bit more sweeter. After checking the pre-draw it left a light peppery taste on my lips.

While toasting up the cigar I got a real sweet aroma in the air. Which lead me to believe I was in for a treat. (get it?) As I started smoking, I picked up tons of Nutty flavors with a slight Peppery undertone. Smoking away and reaching the half way point not much changed and it was the same nutty flavors over and over. There was a bit of cedar from time to time, but not much. What I do like about this cigar is the right amount of pepper. Peppery flavors can be a really great thing or a really bad thing in a cigar. (Hence, The Evil Spice Monkey) In this case, the right amount of pepper is found and it’s a nice aftertaste on the palate. I do have to say, that the flavors in this cigar are pretty one dimensional with just a nutty flavor profile, but its very consistent. Id take a consistent cigar like this any day over a cigar that stars off amazing and ends horrible.

The quality in this cigar is great. The wrapper felt really good and it burned perfect. The ash was strong, white with no flakiness and will stand strong for quite some time.

All in all, the Old Henry is a good cigar and nothing else. It didn’t “wow” me, it didn’t surprise me or leave me wanting for some more, but it did its job. It gave me a good pleasurable smoke with a consistent good flavor. I do recommend this cigar, but only for mild to medium smokers. I don’t think the full body smokers will enjoy it to much.

Final Note: It seems like Don Pepin has worked on everything. Out of all his cigars I have smoked, this was the least favorite. Its decent, but just not my cup of tea. I don’t think I will buy another one, but I wouldn’t mind smoking it again.

Final Grade: C

  2. I had one of these a while back and remember liking it but thought it was a little pricey for a house line. I remember it being very nutty as you said. I might have to get another 5-pack.
